Community Over Cars: Streets Are for People

Summer in Northville just hits different when the streets are closed. Outdoor dining, live music, kids running around without parents scanning for oncoming cars—it’s the kind of downtown vibe you can’t buy (and definitely can’t get with traffic whizzing by).

For years, our seasonal street closures have brought neighbors together, boosted local businesses, and turned Main Street into the community’s living room. But recently, a small but determined group— cough, cough, you know who —pushed to bring cars back during the warmer months. And just like that, the city’s decision to keep our streets for people was overturned.

The thing is… most of us liked it the way it was. We liked walking freely, hearing music instead of mufflers, and sipping a drink in the middle of the street without worrying about a bumper brushing our knees.

This Community Over Cars hat is more than just cotton and threads—it’s a statement. It’s a reminder that vibrant streets make a vibrant community, and that a couple of loud voices shouldn’t drown out the many who want to keep Northville lively, walkable, and welcoming.

Wear it. Start conversations. Let’s bring the streets back to the people—where they belong.
